A classic creamy coleslaw dressing recipe that is perfect for dressing bagged coleslaw mix or for a homemade coleslaw salad.

Coleslaw in bowl with spoon.

A back-pocket creamy coleslaw dressing recipe for dressing any coleslaw cabbage mix. It’s perfect for bagged coleslaw mix or for when you shred your own cabbage.

Ingredients and substitutions

A few notes above the key ingredients …

Sour Cream or Yogurt – You can use either sour cream or plain yogurt for this dressing.

Celery Seed – You’ll find celery seeds in with the spices. Don’t confuse this with celery salt. If you only have celery salt on hand, you can use it but add a bit more and reduce any added salt.

How to use this coleslaw dressing

This coleslaw dressing recipe will dress about 3-4 cups of cabbage (7 oz/200g) of cabbage, which is about 1/2 of a standard bag of coleslaw mix. Double or triple as needed (use the “2X” or 3X” buttons in the Recipe Card to automatically double or triple the ingredients!).

If making coleslaw from scratch, start with 3-4 cups of shredded cabbage and add any or all of the following:

  • 1 cup shredded carrot
  • 1/2 cup diced celery
  • 1/4 cup diced green onion
  • 1 large apple, unpeeled and shredded

Once dressed, coleslaw is best eaten within 2 days. Refrigerate to store.
